Menasha Joint School District Whole Grade Acceleration Process
Acceleration is “progress through an educational program at rates faster or at ages younger than conventional” (Pressey, 1949). The Menasha Joint School District recognizes the need for educational alternatives for the highly capable student. These alternatives may include acceleration beyond a specific grade level, subject acceleration, and/or course acceleration beyond the normal program and curriculum sequence. Grades, subjects, or courses may be waived based upon documented academic proficiency. The Menasha Joint School District has determined specific rules/guidelines to address the acceleration process.
Step 1: Request is made - Parents, teachers, and students can all make a request for acceleration in math. Request is submitted to the Building Principal or Advanced Learning Coordinator
Step 2: District staff will review assessment data, and if deemed appropriate, will conduct IQ testing.
Step 3: Surveys are sent to parent/guardian and school staff to gather information around school and academic factors, developmental factors, interpersonal skills and general information.
Step 4: Once all data is collected, the Acceleration Evaluation Team, reviews test scores and surveys to determine if acceleration is developmentally appropriate.
Step 5: A meeting is scheduled with the student and family to discuss the results.
